Do you open your wardrobe to be greeted by an avalanche of falling clothes? Well now’s the time to get ruthless with your clutter and rid your wardrobe of unwanted clothes and belongings. Here are our tips to achieving a clutter free closet!
Set aside some time
Until you lose your car keys or passport, clearing out clutter may not be high on the priority list, but unless you commit some time, it’ll drop off altogether.
Your storage needs
The size of your bedroom and how much of a fashion fiend you are, will determine what storage solution is right for you.
If space is at a premium, a simple hat and coat stand is a great idea to house bulky coats, hats, scarves and bags, allowing space in your wardrobe for other pieces. Does your current bedroom storage look a little tired and in need of an update? If yes, a Home Robe is the perfect replacement, a range of storage options that can be customised to suit your needs.
When your wardrobe is bursting at the seams, it’s definitely time for a clean out, or additional storage. A clothes rack is a great cost effective way to hang shirts and dresses and store shoes that won’t fit anywhere else.
Make the cull
First things first, you’re going to have to remove everything from your wardrobe and sort into three piles; keep, toss and charity, no sitting on the fence!
Keep – Clothes that fit, you wear all the time and make you feel great are the pieces to keep. Try clothes on as you go, it’s harder to justify keeping a piece if you’re standing in front of a mirror with a critical eye.
Toss – If it’s old and worn or stained, throw it away. Don’t think of it as tossing out old memories or precious things, but rather making way for new pieces you’ll love.
Charity – If you’ve never worn it, chances are you never will. If a piece doesn’t tick all the boxes for the keep pile, it’s time to let it go.
The key to a well-maintained wardrobe is organisation. Once you’ve completed the culling process, it’s time to put everything back. Firstly, no wire hangers! Wire hangers leave marks on your clothes and you’ll constantly find pieces on the floor which have slipped off. Instead, opt for wooden or plastic hangers.
Next, arrange your clothes by type – shirts, jackets, dresses, suits, and hang together, making sure all of your new hangers are hung in the same direction. Remember, you don’t need to hang everything, t-shirts, shorts and jumpers will happily sit folded in a nice set of drawers.
