Small Bedroom Ideas

Many Australian homes are built with small bedrooms, especially in apartments and newer home designs, but a compact space doesn’t have to feel cramped. With the right layout, the right furniture and a few clever styling tricks, a small bedroom can feel calm, open and surprisingly spacious.

At Fantastic Furniture, we know that clever design choices make all the difference to a space, no matter the size. From where you position your bed, to the furniture you choose and the textures you bring in, there are plenty of ways to change the feel of your space. That’s why we’ve asked a few design experts for their top tips for making a small bedroom feel bigger, brighter and more comfortable.

Whether you’re creating a peaceful retreat, a cosy guest room, or simply want your main bedroom to breathe a little more, here are some small bedroom ideas to help you make every square metre count.

Small bedroom layout ideas

Before buying anything new, take a moment to look at your room’s layout and what pieces you already have. Could a piece of furniture be rearranged or swapped out for something smaller? Sometimes simply repositioning your bed can open up the entire room.

Here’s what to think about if you’re working with a compact bedroom.

Where to put the bed

Your bed is the anchor of the room, so its position sets the tone for everything else.

There are plenty of practical ways to design a small bedroom and make it more visually spacious, says Jason Nazmiyal, owner of Nazmiyal Antique Rugs and interior design expert.

“Place your bed against the wall farthest from the door as this creates a clear path and maximises the feeling of depth.”

Ellie Peppas, Founder and Director of Ellie NP Designs, agrees but adds a word of advice, “Try to avoid pushing the bed against a wall, while it might save space, it can make bed-making and access more awkward in the long run.”

Make space to move

A little breathing room makes a big difference in a small bedroom. This means choosing furniture that’s in proportion to the room and allowing for clear pathways around pieces, so you can easily move around.

Floating or wall-mounted furniture is another great trick. Using transparent pieces and shelves or desks attached to the wall keeps the floor visible, making the room appear larger.

Keep sightlines clear

If you can see easily across the room, from the doorway to your window, or to a focal point like art or a mirror, the space will naturally feel more open. Avoid placing tall or bulky pieces where they’ll block your view. Instead, position furniture so your eye can travel easily around the room to create a sense of openness.

Make the most of corners

Corners are prime real estate in a small room. Open corners allow the room to “breathe” and helps the whole space feel less boxed-in. If you do want to make use of your corners though, small items such as a narrow lamp, corner desk or a pot plant, can prevent the space from feeling crowded.

Choosing the right furniture

Include infographic with five simple, evenly spaced images + short labels:

  • Bed with legs showing floor (Lift the bed)
  • Tall wardrobe or bookshelf (Think vertical)
  • Fold-out desk or stackable stools (Keep it flexible)
  • Floating bedside table or wall shelves (Show the floor)
  • Storage bed (Hide the storage)

When working out how to furnish a small bedroom, the key is choosing practical pieces that don’t overwhelm the space.

Stick to one interior style and bring in pieces that align with it, as using mismatched pieces can make small spaces feel cramped and chaotic.

“Using small and adaptable furniture is one way. For instance, you can use floating shelves instead of a bulky nightstand or bed with storage drawers built underneath,” Nazmiyal suggests.

Here are some small bedroom furniture ideas to help you maximise space without sacrificing comfort or style.

Pick the right bed base

A bed base anchors the room while keeping it functional. Choosing a bed frame with visible legs and space underneath is a great way to create the illusion of more space, since it shows more of the floor.

Timber frames bring warmth, while upholstered bases add softness and subtle luxury, without feeling bulky. If clutter is the enemy (and in a small bedroom, it often is), storage beds are some of the best furniture for small bedrooms, ideal for hiding away linen, seasonal clothes or spare pillows.

Think tall, not wide

Vertical storage is one of the easiest ways to open up a room. Jake Fry, Founding Partner and Owner of Smallworks, recommends using vertical units for storage to make the most of your wall height and free up the floor. “Use vertical units for storage, as tall bookcases as an example, or hooks”, he suggests.

Instead of wide, bulky storage units, consider tall wardrobes or shelving to free up space, this also draws the eye upward, making the ceiling feel higher.

Use stackable and foldable pieces

Flexibility is key when working with a small bedroom. Whether you're designing a guest room that doubles as a study or you just need more space to move around, having foldable, portable furniture keeps your room feeling open.

Nazmiyal recommends fold-out desks or compact workstations if you need a study nook. They give you functionality without permanently taking up space.

Show more floor

Slimline, floating furniture and multi-tasking pieces all help a room feel bigger than it is.

Nazmiyal suggests “leggy, mid-century furniture” for this exact reason, and Piatkowski adds that exposing more floor is a visual trick that gives the illusion of more space.

Narrow or wall-mounted bedside tables are ideal for keeping your essentials close, like your phone, a book or glass of water, without taking up too much floor space.

Bring in clever storage solutions

If you’re looking at how to optimise bedroom space, hidden storage and clever furniture placement can make a real difference. Fry’s advice is to keep furniture to a minimum and only use pieces that are necessary to avoid overwhelming the space.

Look for pieces that double as storage to keep floor space open. A storage beds (like one with a gas-lift or built-in drawers) is a game-changer, offering plenty of hidden space without adding extra furniture.

Raised or legged furniture can also help a small bedroom feel more open. Peppas suggests choosing a bed base with enough clearance for under bed storage to keep things nicely hidden. And don’t forget wall-mounted shelves for anything you want off the floor, helping the room feel lighter and less crowded.

Colour, lighting and decor

Colour, lighting and decor work together to shape how a room feels, and in a small bedroom, these details matter even more. Here are a few tips to help each detail work together to make your space feel brighter and more effortlessly inviting.

Pick a calm colour palette

When choosing a colour palette, Fry notes that light and neutral colours can help open up a small bedroom and keep the space feeling airy. Whites, creams, light greys and light beige bounce light beautifully and can bring a sense of calm to a room.

Light tones are also a great option if you enjoy switching up your décor. As Peppas explains, “A neutral foundation allows flexibility to refresh with colour through bedding, artwork or decorative pieces.”

That’s not to say dark hues are off the table. Rich charcoal and deep tones can actually make walls feel further away, creating a sense of depth in a small room. By pairing dark walls with LED strip lighting tucked behind floating shelves or under the bed frame, you can create a moody, cosy feel without the space looking flat or closed in.

Where you apply these colours can also change the perceived scale of the room:

  • To make the room feel longer: Paint the back wall a slightly darker shade than the side walls to create visual depth.
  • To add height: Keep the ceiling a bright white or lighter than the walls, and use a deeper wall colour to draw the eye upward.
  • To make the room feel wider: Paint the back wall and ceiling the same colour, which helps the side walls feel further apart.

Layer your lighting

If you’ve ever Googled “how to make a small room appear larger”, you’ll know that getting the lighting right is one of the most powerful ways to expand a small space. “Blend ambient overhead lighting with task lighting, such as wall sconces,” Nazmiyal suggests.

Using lamps at varying heights is also a great way to add depth and guide the eye upward, subtly making the room feel taller. Add bedside lamps with warm bulbs to create a cosy glow perfect for reading or winding down, and consider a floor lamp to brighten corners or fill in darker areas.

Think about mirrors

Mirrors add instant spaciousness and bounce light around the room, making a big difference in compact bedroom design. “For a more inviting ambience, consider using large mirrors or a collection of smaller ones to reflect light,” says Nazmiyal.

Wall-mounted mirrors placed opposite a window or light source can double the sense of space, while tall, slim mirrors help draw the eye upward. Mirrored wardrobes are a great choice too, offering storage while making the room feel wider and brighter.

Add warmth with textiles and textures

Textures are just as important as your colour palette, as they bring depth and comfort to a small bedroom without overwhelming it. Think linen bedding, soft throws and timber accents to bring warmth without adding clutter.

Rugs are also great for defining smaller zones, which ultimately makes the space feel bigger than it actually is.

Choose a rug that sits at least two-thirds of the way under the bed or extends beyond the sides, as a slightly larger rug actually makes the room feel more open.
