How To Choose A Dining Table

The dining room is the heart of the home. It’s where you can relax with family and friends and enjoy delicious meals and conversation. It’s where memories are made!

Before you start shopping for the perfect dining setting for your home, take the time to consider the following:

Shape

Consider the shape of the table you want and also the shape of your room. Will a round, square or rectangular dining table fit best? Measure the dining room and doorway first to determine exactly what the room can handle.  As a clever rule of thumb, always make sure there is at least 30cm between your table and surrounding furniture.

Style

If you’re after a more traditional dining room style, rich wooden finishes and classic carved legs are ideal. For a country finish, distressed wood and chunky designs, paired with bench seats will achieve the farmhouse feel. Contemporary dining rooms can be achieved using a combination of stainless steel and glass. Matching table to chairs will complete the modern look.

Function

If you love to host big dinner parties, an expandable table is a functional choice. Alternatively, if quiet conversation suits your dining habits, choose a round table that allows everyone to converse easily.

Finish

If you’re in a busy home with lots of dirty little fingers, skip glass tops and go straight for the distressed finishes and light woods which disguise the wear and tear of everyday use.

Chairs

Feel free to mix and match different styles and materials for a modern, eclectic look: metal and wood, moulded polyurethane and hardwood – these days, anything goes. If you have young children you may want to avoid fabric upholstered chairs and instead select chairs with a surface that can be easily wiped clean.

Coordinating pieces

Complete your dining room by adding a coordinating buffet. Both functional and beautiful, a buffet will offer you additional storage for your linen, crockery and glasswear. Add personality to your dining room by displaying your favourite decorator items on top of your buffet. View our range of buffets here.

The finishing touch

You can easily add the designer touch to your dining room by selecting the right lighting. To add a dramatic effect, suspend a pendant light above your dining table. This will provide your dining room with height whilst creating an intimate and beautiful atmosphere in the evenings.
