Here's a question that sounds simpler than it is: What size dining table or dining table set do you actually need?

Most people approach this backwards. They fall in love with a gorgeous table online, order it and then hope it works in their room. But this is a risky gamble. Too big, and you’ll have no space to walk. Too small, and it’ll look awkward in your room.

Getting this balance right makes all the difference to how your dining room actually functions. This guide will fill you in on some average dining table sizes in Australia and how to pick the perfect one for you.

Dining room table measurements

Standard dining table sizes

Understanding standard dining table dimensions helps you shop smarter and compare options properly. Keep in mind that two “6‑seaters” can have completely different dimensions depending on the manufacturer and style, so always check the actual measurements of whatever you’re looking to buy.

How to measure for a dining room table

Room length − 150 cm = Maximum table length
Room width − 150 cm = Maximum table width

This accounts for space around the table for dining chairs and to be able to get up and walk around easily.

So if your dining room is 4.0 × 3.5 metres, your absolute maximum table size would be 2.5 × 2.0 metres.

Don't forget to measure doorways too — there's nothing worse than a perfect table that gets in the way of a door.

Dining room table size standards in Australia

  • Don’t rely on general terms like “4‑seater” or “6‑seater”.
  • Leave at least 90 cm around your dining table.
  • Choose a table that suits your daily dining needs and entertaining style.

Medium dining rooms (3 × 3m to 3.5 × 4m)

In a medium-sized space, you've got room for a proper 6‑seater dining table.

Large dining rooms or open-plan spaces (4m+)

Large dining rooms can handle rectangle dining tables up to an 8‑seater. Smaller tables can be anchored with a rug.

Dining table shape considerations

Rectangle dining tables

Rectangle dining tables are the most versatile option and work well in longer rooms.

Round dining tables

Round dining tables encourage conversation and work beautifully in open plan spaces.
